Kaliningrad launches terminal taking gas from floating LNG platform

KALININGRAD, Jan 9 (PRIME) -- Russia’s Kaliningrad Region has launched a terminal accepting gas from a floating regasification platform for liquefied natural gas (LNG) under a project by gas giant Gazprom on Tuesday.

CEO of Gazprom Alexei Miller said that the region now receives gas from the LNG terminal only, and the pipeline gas supplies across Lithuania have stopped. The terminal daily capacity is 13.2 million cubic meters of gas.

President Vladimir Putin, who participated in the launch said, “We know full well that the delivery of a primary energy resource, like natural gas, across such distances by pipe is a more economically feasible way of supply, a cheaper one but for us, in particular, for the Kaliningrad Region, this creates the reserve capacities, most probably, which would minimize, or in fact, eliminate all transit risks.”

Putin also said that the difference in the price of natural gas sent by pipeline and LNG must not lay a burden on the end consumer. Putin added that he had ordered the government to make corresponding proposals.
